Transitional comfort objects
My Master’s thesis focuses on transitional comfort objects: items that offer their owners solace and comfort during a transition or change. Through a survey, I investigated whether people own such an object and why it serves as a comfort object for them. The responses revealed that all these objects share three striking characteristics. The objects are a permanent presence in the owner’s life, ensuring they are there when needed. They also carry memories of a particular person, which may even be the owner themselves at a different stage of life. The tangible nature and active use of the objects is the third key element: many owners frequently touch the object or play with it whilst engaged in other activities. I have incorporated these three characteristics into my works. During this project, I also explored how other artists approached this subject matter and its formal aspects.
